Based on the Kapiti Coast, Steve Mackay started his company in 2001 and now offers his clients around three decades of building experience. Initially starting with just himself on the tools it was not long before he was joined by adult apprentice Kyle Sargent who still works for the company today 12 years later. Steve’s son Kyle is now completing his apprenticeship with the company giving S & J Mackay Builders a team of three.
A Licensed Building Practitioner and Master Builder Steve says the company’s size is its point of difference and a major factor in its success in the House of the Year competition.
“Being small means I have a lot of control over what we do. It’s about quality not quantity. We focus on a small number of projects each year and concentrate on one at a time meaning our clients get a very personal building experience and our full dedication,” he says.
Steve is still on the tools whenever possible as building is his passion. He seeks to develop close relationships with his clients as he works alongside them to deliver their dream home.
